The gyrl grip is the intimate live art collaboration of Llewyn Máire and Lisa Newman, founded in 2001.

Using video, movement, sound sculpture, endurance, conceptual and text-based performance, the gyrl grip explores new possibilities of communicating what is incommunicable.

The gyrl grip is driven by the desire to reveal, and de-veil challenging issues that exist within postmodern life and society. Our goal is not to provide answers, but to expose the difficult questions hidden behind cultural taboos and media spectacle, and to provide a forum for dialogue (internal and external) through the performative act.

We discover new languages through any means necessary and encourage our audiences to try on different tongues.

Additionally, Llewyn Máire and Lisa Newman co-direct/curate events as, 2 Gyrlz

The most recent evolution of the series, Honey, manifested at Vicera II, Victoria, CA with Ron Athey and Samatha Sweeting. Previous manifestations include Dartington, Britain, and Hotel Pupik/Scrättenberg Scloß, Austria.

Additional notable work has been made at 5 Holes (Toronto, Canada 2006), Studio Là-Bas' Space Contentions festival (Helsinki & Turku, Finland 2004), Full Nelson 5 (Los Angels, USA 2003), FluXconcert PDX (Portland, USA 2003), and public interventions throughout the US Pacific Northwest.
