Kobe beef are the Cadillacs of the cow world. They are raised in beautiful green open pastures, are fed beer to whet their appetites and are massaged with sake to keep their muscles marblized and their skin soft.
In this performance, we explore the preparation of Kobe beef, as well as the fetishization of decadence through consumption.
Lisa is assisted by two "handlers", which have been instructed to prepare her as they would expensive meat. Lisa is naked in a large tub, drinking Sapporo out of a rabbit feeder bottle while the two handlers, wearing sterile gloves, massage her vigorously and baste her with sake. Cuts of raw beef are placed beneath her body. They will be slowly marinating in run-off from the sake, mixed with sweat. Llewyn will be regularly pulling this beef from the tub, grilling it nearby, and serving it to the audience.
The flavors and smell of the cooked meat matches the visual, auditory, and olfactory components of the centerpiece of the performance - bringing it together in the mouths of the viewers.
This performance is not so much pro-vegetarian as it is an exploration of decadence, food, and sacrifice.
The performance runs roughly 45 - 60 minutes and is presented in install-action form.. |
