SRS: Stations Remain Structure
a Transexual Process by Way (Stations) of the Cross
A conceptual/ endurance score, exploring the medical, cultural, and psychological endurance of a transsexual male(?)-to-other(?) process. This process is illustrated through a parallel of the experience with the biblical Stations of the Cross; beginning with diagnosis (sentencing) and ending with surgery (crucifixion); through action, video and sound.
Developed by Llewyn Máire and Lisa Newman
Through the two main characters, "Tranny Christ" and "Doctor Simon", the liminal areas of gender are explored. The culturally defined male/female binaries are blurred as the main character endures social and medical trials associated with the transexual process. The multifaceted role of "Doctor Simon", played by Newman, also includes "Mary", "Vera", and "Pontius Pilate".
In "SRS" the grip presents new questions and social challenges surrounding a transsexual process. This performance is semi auto-biographical, and draws on Llewyn's own experience as a transperson.
This performance debuted in the Full Nelson 5 International Performance Art Festival in April of 2003. The gyrl grip has received an invitation to repeat this performance in Seattle as part of a presentation by art theorist and professor, Meiling Cheng, "On the Edge:West Coast Performance in the Americas" at the College Art Association annual conference in February of 2004. |
